EFI Acquires Escada Systems — Extending Its Offering for the Corrugated Packaging Market

Electronics For Imaging, Inc. (Nasdaq:EFII) announced today the acquisition of Escada Systems (Escada), a leading provider of Corrugator Control systems for the packaging market. Based in the United Kingdom and with operations also in the United States, privately held Escada brings a strong reputation for innovation and vast experience in helping packaging companies to achieve greater productivity, quality and profitability.

EFI is a market leader in providing a complete ecosystem for corrugated production, that includes the EFI Nozomi C18000, an ultra-high-speed single-pass LED inkjet press powered by the award winning Fiery DFE together with leading edge inks, and the EFI Corrugated Packaging Productivity Suite, the market's first end-to-end software offering for business management and manufacturing execution, which is gaining global momentum, serving corrugated packaging companies around the globe. The addition of Escada's technology and expertise will enable EFI to expand the Productivity Suite's value to sheet feeders and full corrugated box plants, to also include comprehensive control and traceability for the entire corrugation process.

"We are thrilled to add the Escada team and technology to our leading portfolio for the Packaging industry," said Gabriel Matsliach, senior vice president and general manager, EFI Productivity Software. "The addition of Escada makes EFI a one stop shop for enabling packaging companies to improve the quality, efficiency and profitability of the corrugation process, using their existing corrugators."

While financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, it is not expected to be material to EFI's Q4 or full year 2017 results. Escada employees, including founder and former principal Gavin Bushby, have joined EFI's Productivity Software business unit.

"We are very excited to join the EFI family and to play a role in EFI's strategy for the packaging industry," said Gavin Bushby, Chairman of Escada. "EFI global scale and reach will enable more customers to benefit from our innovative technologies for years to come. I look forward to being an active member of this world-class organization and to help them innovate to advance both traditional and digital on-demand technologies and help our industry and customers to grow and prosper."

Escada Team Event - Dalby Forest

Earlier this month, an intrepid team of brave Escada employees set off to Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire (a beautiful forest located on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park and maintained by the UK Forestry Commission).

Their goal? To fearlessly conquer the dizzy height challenges presented to them by 'Go Ape' - three hours of tackling the forest canopy - taking on zip wires, tarzan swings, rope ladders and a variety of obstacles and crossings!

Those that survived are pictured below! For more information about 'Go Ape' in Dalby Forest, visit http://goape.co.uk/days-out/dalby

Syncro7 Dry End for Smurfit Kappa Lurgan

Escada Systems recently completed a project with Smurfit Kappa Lurgan to upgrade their corrugator by integrating a Fosber Twin400 slitter scorer into their existing Agnati dry end.

Escada supplied and installed their Syncro7 dry end control system to manage the order change and to communicate with the new Fosber equipment, the existing Agnati dry end machines, Baviera steam system and the OMP scheduling system. Standard Syncro interfaces were used for the majority of the communications but the Hitachi PLC interfaces for the stacker were reverse engineered by Escada working with the SK Lurgan engineering department to ensure that the features of the existing dry end were maintained.

Escada prepared for a tight installation schedule by pre-installing and testing most of their equipment in advance. A successful installation saw a number of different vendors and the customer working well together, providing SK Lurgan with a state of the art platform to enable future upgrades of their corrugator with machinery from any manufacturer. They also have access to Escada’s 24/7 support service and VPN based remote access in the event that they any experience problems.

All New Syncro 7 Dry End Control for RIGID Limerick

Escada and RIGID Group recently celebrated completing the successful installation of Escada’s Syncro 7 control system on the Massenzana Corrugator at Limerick. Whilst the corrugator machinery is in good condition, RIGID had identified the ageing and unsupported control system as a major business risk. By replacing it with Escada’s state of the art Dry End control the plant benefits from productivity improvements due to the latest technology and full support from the Escada customer service team, improving reliability and giving the corrugator a new lease of life.

Pictured below are Donie Goulding, John Malone, Tom Keating, Joe Carey and Colm Loughran (RIGID), and Iain Crampton (Escada).

SuperCorr 2016, Orlando Florida

Escada recently exhibited at the 2016 TAPPI/AICC SuperCorr Expo - the largest exposition for the corrugated industry in the Western Hemisphere. Held in Orlando, Florida, around 350 industry suppliers gathered with over 3000 (apparently – we didn’t see them all!) manufacturing representatives from over 70 countries. This was a great chance for Escada to network and showcase our products and services to markets where we aim to grow – particularly North America.

Escada features both a half-page advert and accompanying editorial piece in IPBI September 2016. The editorial is related to the recent replacement of MHI Sigma Corrugator and Process controls at Board 24, Preston. The text in the article reads as follows:

"While developing its plans for the new hall and corrugator, Board24 did not want to overlook the other machine on site. To this end, they went about looking at how they could get more from the existing Mitsubishi 2.5m corrugator. Coming up to 20 years old, the machine runs both single and doublewall board, with impressive performance. “We knew the machine could still produce more though,” says Eric Marshall, Operations Manager – Preston. “We contacted Escada, who we have known for years, and asked them to come and look at what they could install to help us get more out of the machine.” Escada set about replacing the Sigma X and Sigma Process systems on the MHI corrugator with a Syncro7 corrugator control package.

The project saw the replacement of the complete Sigma dry-end, wet-end and process control systems with new electronics. A number of site surveys and testing visits were made to ensure that Escada, working with Board24’s technical department, were able to reverse engineer the no-gap order change system. The second phase of the project was the removal of the Sigma Process PLC, which controlled all the wrap arms plus the double backer shoes and provides E-stop, normal stop and error annunciation."

The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge 2016 in aid of Ryedale Special Families.

Image title

Bright and early on Saturday 16th July, Escada’s Greg Pearson and 158 other cyclists limbered up at Norton College for their forthcoming 146 miles in the saddle. Granted, for some, limbering up meant drinking a pint of coffee and eating their way through a family pack of doughnuts! Training comes in all shapes and sizes after all.

Riders were set off in groups of 12 by Vale Radio and headed straight for Settrington Bank, a 17% incline only 3 miles into the ride – one way to warm up for the rest of the day. A tailwind for the first 50 miles was most welcome in the heat of the day but soon became a glorious memory as the route turned west and the wind became a very cheeky headwind for the last couple of hours.

Still, the half way point finally emerged down a side road at Hutton Cranswick and the welcome sight of a bar, proper seating, showers and the not so enviable task of pitching the tent in very windy conditions hove into sight. Riders came in at their own pace, including a young man who, previous to that weekend, had only ever cycled 5 miles (not just in one go – EVER), needless to say he was standing on the pedals when he arrived and did not avail himself of the bench seating! With everyone safely ensconced at the end of day one, the live band struck up and the smell of pure protein floated on the air from the fabulous BBQ. Despite calls for all-night drinking and carousing, everybody was tucked up in their sleeping bags by 10:30pm.

The Sunday brought more sunshine and, you guessed it, more wind. Riders described Thixendale as a wind tunnel (other names, not suitable for publication, were also muttered), but all agreed that the landscape was utterly stunning and a reminder of the beauty of North and East Yorkshire. After vital stops for water, the catching of breath and consumption of cake, riders started arriving back at their starting point and were thrilled and moved to see a welcoming committee waiting for them. Service users and staff of Ryedale Special Families had set up a welcome home marque to show how much they appreciate the effort all the riders made to raise vital funds for their amazing charity. Cheering and slapping of backs over, people set off for home, sore (especially one aforementioned young man, who finished the ride to a massive cheer of respect and an understanding of the reasons for padded shorts), weary but totally elated at their achievement and asking when can they register for 2017.

Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge

This July will see the 6th Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge (16th & 17th July) in aid of a local charity: Ryedale Special Families. So far this fantastic annual fundraising event has raised over £80,000 for this wonderful charity which helps children with disabilities and illness and supports their families.

Escada Systems have been a key sponsor of the challenge every year since it began and are proud to continue to do so. Sponsorship allows the challenge to run in a safe, professional and fun way and would not be able to continue without it. We value the work Ryedale Special Families does in our local community and are very pleased to be able to support them in this way.

In addition, we have always had staff members take part in the challenge. This year is no different with several of our staff members signed up for this July’s 146 miles ride. Training is well and truly underway and there is always some lycra drying in the office! We wish everyone from Escada every success this year and hope for sunshine on the Wolds.

For more information on the ride, see: http://www.yorkshirewoldscyclechallenge.org.uk/index.html and for more information on our chosen charity, please see: http://www.ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk/

The Escada Group is proud to announce that it has now moved into it's new Corporate Headquarters in C4DI based in the exciting '@TheDock Development' in the Fruit Market, Hull's rapidly developing tech/digital and creative quarter of the city.

Image title

The newly completed building is stunning - striking and elegant in a contemporary way, hitting the right notes to announce 'innovation' in terms of its bold angles and colours - most noticeably its cladding in golden 'scales'. The leaning, bevelled silouette is the perfect counter-foil to its (equally noticeabale and unique-looking) companion across the narrow estuary - 'The Deep'.

Escada Systems has expanded significantly in the recent years and will retain its other geographical projects and production facilities based in Malton, North Yorkshire (UK) and Decatur, Atlanta (USA).

The new Escada Headquarters are supremely situated at the front of the 2nd floor overlooking the Humber Estuary, forming part of the Group's planned future growth and strategic vision.

Escada to celebrate its 30th anniversary at FEFCO.....

2015 sees the 30th anniversary of Escada Systems! What better way to celebrate this than at FEFCO along with our customers – who’ve been together with us on our journey and made this landmark possible. Escada was founded in 1985 and quickly gained a reputation for delivering high performance real-time industrial control systems. Escada were invited to develop a Dry End control system by a plant in Holland to improve the efficiency of the Corrugator. This is where Escada’s first product was born - the ‘Escort’ dry end control system. Not only was a product born, but also a key ethos that remains a huge focus at Escada, and that is our excellent working relationships with our customers. Many aspects of Escada’s products that are available on the market today have been developed together with our customers, and we’ve also worked together on many specialised and bespoke applications.

Over its 30 year life, without doubt the key factor in the success of Escada has been evolution – taking place by maintaining these close relationships with customers and also machine manufacturers whilst having a keen eye on technology and the demands of the industry. This is an evolution that has seen Escada transform from its beginnings in 1985 to being a worldwide market leader for the supply of control and data systems to the corrugated industry, supplying plant-wide solutions from the Roll Store, through the Corrugator, to Finished Goods and also in Data Traceability and Analysis.

The 30th anniversary also sees other landmarks for Escada, not least the imminent opening (October) of our new corporate headquarters and innovation centre at C4DI in Hull. These new headquarters will be focussed on accelerating the further evolution of Escada and will house business management and our newly formed sales team. It is our pleasure to welcome you to our stand at FEFCO (021 and 022) to discuss our progress, what is new at Escada, how we can help you and we extend the invitation you to join us in our anniversary celebrations!

On yer bike! .........

The Yorkshire Wold’s Cycle Challenge has become a staple of the Escada Systems calendar. Greg has ridden it every year since its inception in 2010 and has been accompanied by various Escada teammates over the years, including Kevin, Mike, Mark and Len.

Image titleImage titleImage title

The ride takes place over a weekend in mid-July and takes in some of the most beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The Challenge comes from the fact that the ride is 146 miles long and includes some serious hills and banks, enough to make grown men cry.

The challenge was set up by the cycling championing charity Sustrans who worked closely with Ryedale Special Families (RSF), a local charity that supports hundreds of children and young adults and their families with special needs, illnesses and disabilities. Escada Systems recognised the great work that this charity do and wanted to do their bit by becoming an annual sponsor of the challenge.

Each year sees its own trials and tribulations, from hail and thunder in the first year, to punctures, falls and equipment failures in subsequent years, yet the ride is growing in popularity due to the cheerful atmosphere during the cycling and in the evening at the overnight camp. Serious riders swap stories with novices or fun riders and almost everyone swears to “see you next year”.

Escada become Hull’s Centre for Digital Innovation’s
first tenant

From the following article in the BDAILY:

http://bdaily.co.uk/industrials/10-06-2015/escada-become-hulls-centre-for-digital-innovations-first-tenant/

Image title

The innovative office development - the Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) - has secured its first office tenant.

The Escada Group, an international hardware and software developer and supplier of control systems to the corrugated paper manufacturing industry, is to lease a 2000 sq ft unit on the second floor of the building.

C4DI, which was developed by Hull-based Wykeland Group, acts as the centrepiece of @TheDock, a huge regeneration scheme located in Hull’s Fruit Market and Central Dry Dock area.

The 23,000 sq ft office building is designed to cater for start-ups in the digital and tech industries, and aims to create a thriving digital community which will help conventional businesses innovate, grow and use technology more effectively.

The Escada Group, which works with clients ranging from independent businesses to large, global groups, will base its corporate headquarters at C4DI while maintaining other offices and production facilities in Malton and Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and in Atlanta, USA.

Gavin Bushby, founder and chairman of the Escada Group, said: “As part of our company strategy, our vision is to create a more corporate-focused company with an emphasis on product and systems innovation and safeguarding the future success, expansion and stability of the Escada Group.

“During our investigation process we met with the C4DI team and were extremely inspired with their vision and enthusiasm. The links with the universities and colleges are vital for us to recruit and nurture talent for the future, and the community that will develop along with C4DI will provide us with essential opportunities to build relationships with other skilled individuals and technical companies.

“We feel by moving our corporate headquarters to C4DI we can achieve our vision and much, much more.”

The ground floor of C4DI will feature hotdesks, public workspaces, meeting room and a large presentation/studio space which has a variety of uses. The building’s upper floors will provide different sized offices aimed at SME and fast-growing companies in the digital and technology sector.

Furthermore, the development has also installed the fastest broadband in the city provided by KC Lightstream with each desk providing the user with a 100Mb symmetric connection.

Mr Bushby added: “Hull has a strong, emerging digital technology community and an excellent, high-speed fibre optic network which is really important for a business like ours, those at the forefront of developing some of the best technologies in the world.”

John Connolly, managing director of C4DI Ltd, the innovation and workspace management company said: “We are delighted that the Escada Group is relocating to Hull for its new corporate HQ. The move reflects the benefits of the knowledge, connectivity, infrastructure and support available to fast-growing technology businesses that we have here in Hull.

“Over the last few months the Escada Group has become more involved with the C4DI community. We’ve seen how their projects have brought new work to start-up businesses and how the business has developed new products and solutions by tapping into the expertise and talent already in Hull.

“The Escada Group’s global reputation as an innovator within their field, together with their ambition and plans for the growth of their business is hugely exciting both for them, and for the city, and we look forward to their team being based here.”

Our new HQ is being built.

Last October (2014) we announced that as part of our new Group restructure we were in discussions with the C4Di management team about a possible partnership to locate our HQ into their new multi-million pound property development in Hull. We are pleased to confirm that Escada has become the first company to officially take space in the Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI), which is earmarked as the centre-piece of the digital and creative industries quarter around the Fruit Market in Hull.

Escada will take space on the second floor of the development.
